Bachelor Studies in ELIT

English Language and Literature (ELIT) program promotes interdisciplinary research and encourages cooperative learning and discussion in the classroom. After completing our program, students will understand the value of communication and representation in the context of English as a global language, and how language and culture determine a nation’s understanding and ability to represent its identity. Students will become more confident about their ability to use English in different contexts.

 

They will also be prepared to teach English as a foreign language in many settings or pursue academic research in the field of literature and related disciplines. What makes our program different and unique is the University’s approach to higher education, which is international and interdisciplinary, whereby students are provided with individual attention and academic guidance.

The Bachelor of Arts in ELIT at IUS is a four-year, eight-semester program of 240 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), broken down into about 30 ECTS per semester. 

Earning a Bachelor’s degree is one of the most important steps you can take towards increasing your earning potential and job opportunities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To detect relations between the nature of language, the concept of meaning and socio-cultural variables;
  • To understand the significant number of texts from various periods of English literature, based on the principles of literary criticism;
  • To identify different approaches to the analysis of spoken and written text, sentence analysis, discourse analysis, vocabulary analysis, analysis of spoken interaction, the interpretation of literary practice, the study of (non)standard languages ​​and the standardization process;
  • To describe the fundamental values ​​and principles of teaching through personal educational stance that relies on the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the domain of educational studies;
  • To demonstrate understanding of generic conventions and discourse variables that determine factors such as authorship, creating text, target audience and critical reading;
  • To interpret literary and non-literary texts, relying on the concepts and theories that are prevalent in the English language;
  •  To communicate fluently and correctly in English at C1 level;
  • To transmit knowledge on various topics orally and in writing;
  • To develop criteria for determining and reviewing their own principles of professional ethics;
  • To analyze different concepts with an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge;
  • To demonstrate a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills;
  • To demonstrate the skills needed to acquire further knowledge in formal and informal contexts;
  • To gather data from various sources in order to explore the deeper understanding of the sphere of interest.

Objectives:

  • To enhance the level of students’ English competency and improve their language skills;
  • To ensure that students use their language skills properly and effectively;
  • To expose students to a wide range and variety of approaches to literary study, which may include creative practice, performance, and extensive specialisation in critical, educational or linguistic theory;
  • To demonstrate how literature and language produce and reflect cultural change and difference;
  • To help students recognize the multi-faceted nature of English Language and Literature, and its complex relationship with other disciplines and forms of knowledge;
  • To provide a groundwork for interdisciplinary study;
  • To promote supportive atmosphere for practical activities of scholarship in English Literature and Language;
  • To prepare students for professional life after their graduation.

English Language and Literature program graduates will have a wide range of career opportunities. Attractive job opportunities for ELIT graduates include the following: English language instructor, media editorial assistant, journalist, English teacher, English translator, editor, legal assistant, technical writer, project manager, and public relations officer.

 

Candidates who are citizens of foreign countries can submit preliminary application for admission before the official call is published by the University, so that they can obtain necessary residency permits and satisfy language requirements prior to the start of lectures at the University.
