ELIT Master Study

This postgraduate program offers advanced language, critical thinking skills and the opportunity to start a career in academia. The program enables students to review in detail English literature and its progression in a sequential way, from the old English period to the present, with a focus on American Literature and the Literature of various ethnic groups writing in English. This will serve as a valuable background as they integrate the study of literature with social, cultural, political, historical, economic, and religious knowledge and begin to comprehend the complex relationship between the construction of literature and the globalized world of the 21st century. Then, while studying in the graduate program in English literature, students also conduct a far-reaching research and analysis to build up gradually their critical thinking skills, understanding and academic production. When they finish the program, they could analyze independently any literary text and formulate their own conclusion. The postgraduate study program, besides giving knowledge about English language and literature, also provides them with the opportunity to develop their artistic and creative skills and become independent literary critics in thinking and interpretation.

Objectives :

  • To enhance the students’ English competency and gain the specialized vocabulary required for academic research in English Language and Literature
  • To ensure that students could use their language skills properly and effectively in reading, writing and presenting their views
  • To foster the intellectual development of the students as they come to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of research in English Language and Literature
  • To study the cultural context in which a literary work is produced and consumed
  • To encourage the mental habits which transform new knowledge into an individual, critical perspective
  • To provide training for interdisciplinary study and literary research
  • To promote an atmosphere for the practical enquiry and academic activities

Learning Outcomes

After finishig postgraduate program students will:

  • demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, including influential criticism of and commentary on those texts;
  • examine the underlying philosophical premises  within a work of literature, orally or in writing, through interdisciplinary critical analysis;
  • determine the social or cultural functions of a literary text and its historical context or political dimensions in the process of its interpretation;
  • explain how elements of rhetoric, such as purpose, style, structure and genre, function in a literary texts to achieve a particular effect;
  • locate and utilize reliable resources for the purpose of writing academic articles and research in the field of English Language and Literature;
  • solve problems caused by the nature of interaction between the second language learning process and the specific context by recognising a wide range of ways in which participants of that process may act;
  • write informed and well-organized research papers in clear and effective English prose;
  • exchange knowledge and results of research with experts from the field of English language and literature and from other scientific disciplines, orally and in writing, while respecting international academic standards;
  • use skills necessary for further acquisition and transfer of knowledge in formal and informal context.
